Many images on this site are watermarked. If you need an image free of watermarks please contact the archive for help. Our institutions provide non-watermarked images for a variety of purposes, and frequently without cost, but our legal and ethical responsibilities as collecting institutions can preclude us posting those to the open web. Our organizations seek to balance our missions of access and outreach with our obligation to provide good stewardship of cultural property. This entails preservation and curation of original materials and their digital surrogates, creating and sharing accurate and informative metadata about our holdings, and respecting the rights that creators and their estates hold in the works in our collections. Watermarks make our efforts visible and discourage the misuse of protected intellectual property. Success in both areas is important to building the awareness of our contribution that we need to secure ongoing funding and to keeping good relationships with the donors who place their work in our collections for the benefit of our audiences.
