FAQ

What is Project CHART?
Project CHART (Cultural Heritage, Access, Research and Technology) is a collaborative effort of Pratt Institute’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), the Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Public Library focusing on providing hands-on training for the next generation of information professionals to be effective digital mangers and curators for digital collections and services within cultural institutions.

Are Brooklyn Visual Heritage and Project CHART the same thing?
The Brooklyn Visual Heritage website was developed as part of Project CHART as an easily accessible way to share the historic images of Brooklyn that were digitized by interns. While Project CHART’s time frame is limited to the three years of the grant, we hope that Brooklyn Visual Heritage will have a long life beyond the grant timeframe.

Why are there no clickable subject headings or linkable locations in Brooklyn Museum images?
One of the ways that Brooklyn Visual Heritage unique is that is there is no unified metadata scheme between the institutions. Since BHS, BM, and BPL all have well established cataloging procedures, we used this site to create a unified data format without requiring the institutions to change their practices. In some cases it was not possible to make data fields match up exactly, so some information is missing from the site. A keyword search of the subject or location will search the data of all three institutions and return those results. Also, if users follow the image link back to the museum website they will be able to find additional data about the images or sources from which they came.

Can I be a Project CHART intern?
Sadly selection of applicants for the final year of Project CHART has closed. Please check with your university or on the partner websites for other internship opportunities.

Can I be a partner of Brooklyn Visual Heritage?
Maybe. We are not currently adding partners but we may in the future. If you are interested in becoming a partner institution or getting involved in another way, please contact us to discuss future possibilities.

Can I have my site added to the resources page?
Please send us the link and if it is relevant we will add it.

Where do you get your material?
All of the images on Brooklyn Visual Heritage come directly from the collections of the Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn Museum, and Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Collection.

What types of materials do you put on your site?
Brooklyn Visual Heritage is currently all visual materials including photographs, trade cards, postcards, and lantern slides.

How can I see a high resolution copy of this image without a watermark?
You can contact the Brooklyn Historical Society or Brooklyn Public Library directly to see the watermarked item in person, or you can purchase copies of any of the images by following the link on the image page.
