Brooklyn Historical Society

With the IMLS funded Project CHART, the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) has been able to make our historic photograph collections even more accessible.

Project CHART has helped BHS digitize more collections, and add further context to our archival collections.  Project CHART builds upon the work that the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) "Hidden Collections" grant from 2009-2012 accomplished: an archives survey of all of the collections at BHS that brought together manuscript and photographic collections that were separated upon arrival at BHS.  This reunion has greatly enriched the historical context and research value of both collections.  Several examples of this can already be found on the BHS website where the collection-level information is linked to the item-level photographs and item-level is then linked back to the collection-level, keeping archival context intact regardless of where you access collection information.  The Frank J. Trezza Shipbuilding collection is one such example.

We are excited to find more ways to enhance our collections online and the Brooklyn Visual Heritage site is a great platform to make this happen, allowing researchers to access Brooklyn's rich visual history in one location.
